It is found throughout the island, usually where there is forest cover, this includes the mountainous regions with an elevation up to 5,500 ft above sea level, excluding extremely dry areas of the Northern and Southern regions. This bird can be observed in the Mitirigala Forest Reserve, Kitulgala Forest Reserve, The Peak Wilderness Sanctuary, Bodhinagala Forest, Morapitiya Forest, Sinharaja Rain Forest, Kanneliya Forest Reserve, Hiyare Forest Reserve, Minneriya National Park and the Wilpattu National Park.
