Also called the Crimson-fronted Barbet, it is widely found in the wet zone of the low country going up to the mid hills. Can be seen very rarely in the dry zone. Found mainly in forests and densely wooded areas with rare sightings even in home gardens and urban surroundings. This bird can be observed in the Peak Wilderness Sanctuary, Bodhinagala Forest, Morapitiya Forest Reserve, Sinharaja Rain Forest, Kanneliya Forest Reserve, Hiyare Forest Reserve and the Udawattakele Forest Reserve.
