Found mostly in the south-west lowland wet zone, being very rare in the dry zone and mountainous regions. It is a very reserved bird that exists in the thick, dense rainforests; especially catchment and riverine forests in the dry zone. This bird can be observed in Mitirigala Forest reserve, Kitulgala Forest Reserve, The Peak Wilderness Reserve, Bodhinagala Forest Reserve, Morapitiya Forest Reserve, Sinharaja Rain Forest, Kanneliya Forest Reserve and Hiyare Forest Reserve.
